Kitchen Profile Maintenance: Cleaning & Care Guide

To clean aluminium kitchen profiles, wipe them with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then dry them immediately. Never use acidic cleaners, bleach or scouring pads — these permanently damage anodised and PVD finishes. A weekly wipe is enough to keep profiles looking new for years.

That is the short version. The longer version is worth two minutes, because most dull, patchy kitchen profiles were not badly made. They were badly cleaned.

Why do kitchen profiles lose their shine?

Your profiles have a protective finish on them, and it is thinner than you’d think.

Anodised aluminium — the usual silver, black or bronze — has a hard protective layer grown into the metal. Scrub it with a green scouring pad and you scrape that layer off. What’s underneath goes chalky and uneven, and it cannot be put back.

PVD finishes like rose gold, champagne and gunmetal are tougher than they look but only a few microns thick. They handle daily cooking without complaint. What they don’t survive is acidic tile cleaner, which can mark them in a single wipe.

Powder-coated profiles are essentially a baked-on paint film. Thinner, acetone and strong solvents soften them.

None of this shows up immediately. It shows up six months later, as patchiness you can’t scrub away.

How to clean aluminium kitchen profiles

1. Dust before you wipe. Run a dry microfibre cloth along the profile first. Wet-wiping over loose grit is what causes those fine scratches you only see in sunlight.
2. Keep the solution mild. Warm water plus a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap. Kitchen grease does not need anything stronger.
3. Wipe along the length. Follow the direction of the profile, not across it. On brushed finishes, always go with the grain.
4. Rinse with a clean damp cloth. Soap left behind attracts dust and dulls the surface faster than the dust would on its own.
5. Dry it properly. Water sitting in gola channels and profile grooves is the number one cause of edge staining, especially during monsoon.

For hardened grease near the hob, rest a warm soapy cloth over the spot for a minute and let it soften. Don’t scrape it off.

Fixing the four problems everyone actually has

Turmeric and masala stains. Speed matters more than strength. Wipe with mild soapy water while it’s fresh. Do not reach for bleach — it will outlast the stain in a bad way.

Hard water spots. These are mineral deposits from drying water, not dirt. Prevent them by drying after every clean. Never treat them with the acidic descaler you use in the bathroom.

Sticky grease film near the hob. Warm soapy water and patience. Repeat the wipe twice rather than scrubbing once.

Fingerprints on rose gold and dark finishes. A dry microfibre cloth removes most of them. For the stubborn ones, barely damp cloth, then buff dry.

What should never touch your kitchen profiles

Acidic bathroom and tile cleaners. Bleach and chlorine. Ammonia-based glass sprays. Steel wool and green scrub pads. Steam cleaners near seals and gaskets. Anything sold for “tough hard water stains” without checking whether it’s safe for coated aluminium.

Simple rule: if the label doesn’t say it’s safe for anodised or coated aluminium, assume it isn’t.
